Today we had a little chat with the fashionable Jodie Chan, a 2012 APA Diploma Course Student and founder of the lifestyle perfume brand ‘Esscentric’ with its products now also sold in Joyce, Pacific Place .
We talked about her love for scents and fashion, the power of essential oils and why she created a ‘Perfume for Rebels’:
1) Jodie, what were your reasons for studying aromatherapy?
I’ve been always interested in scents, and that’s how I found APA. Just after attending the Introductory Course, I decided to take their Diploma Course to explore more in-depth on aromatherapy.
2) What did you like most about APA’s Diploma Course? Any subject(s) you found challenging?
The subject I liked most was Essential Oil Pharmacy; the most challenging subject for me was Anatomy.
3) Can you tell us a bit about your experience with your case studies?
It took quite some time to finish them, but it proved to be really useful to having done all case studies. Because we really could feel how those essential oils worked and how powerful they were, after the treatments I could see my clients improve their conditions.
That made me very happy!
4) How do you apply your knowledge learnt from the in-class hours and experiences you gained from your case studies?
I worked in fashion merchandising before and have always been a fashion and perfume addict!
After my studies, I wondered why nobody uses these beautiful natural essential oils to create intense perfumes.
That’s why I created my own brand out of the idea to let more people understand not only the natural art of scents, but also their functions and present essential oils in a more ‘lifestyle’ way.
‘Esscentric’ is the brand that mixes scent, lifestyle, fashion and music. All of our product packaging also mixes leather, wood, metal and steel – a ‘Perfume for Rebels’!

Our first collection features 6 kinds of scents and they are for unisex use, which you can apply whenever you want. The design is user- friendly in a roll on bottle with gorgeous leather and chain – a perfume that doubles as a fashion statement.
5) Any tips for our readers who are interested in taking this Diploma course?
I can’t say that the Diploma Course is easy, however, after completing it you can certainly get a more brilliant life.
No matter if after your studies you would like to make it your career or use it as personal knowledge, it will definitely bring you a new vision. And once you’ve started and give it a lot of passion, I’m sure you can earn more than you’ve expected.
